“Roku Na” is about grinding, hustling, pursuing your dreams no matter what. In other words, “we don’t stop”. Sonically and stylistically, “Roku Na” attempts to inhabit some territory between “Yeezus”-era Kanye West, early Travis Scott as well as some darker OVO releases.

Although the song was written and recorded before the coronavirus pandemic, the lyrics of “Roku Na” now take on another meaning - not only because of the seemingly never-ending waves of lockdowns, but also for musicians and artists who cannot help but keep creating new works in the midst of all the adversity.

That earworm of a hook is provided by one of the most unique vocalists in desi hip hop today, Kaater. Although his first big break was as a featured artist on Punjabi pop icon Diljit Dosanjh’s 2018 punjabi hip hop track “Putt Jatt Da”, it was with his killer chorus for Ikka and Divine’s epic collab “Level Up” in 2020 on Mass Appeal India that desi hip hop fans really stood up and took notice.

Meanwhile, on the other side of Chandigarh, rapper/producer GD 47 was racking up collabs with Navv Inder, Lil Golu, and even a Bollywood feature or two. After contributing vocals to Su Real’s reggaeton club banger “Lala” in 2018, both artists decided to collaborate on more songs together.
Over the course of the following months, whenever Delhi-based DJ Su Real booked a gig in Chandigarh, he would stay on for a few extra days, composing and recording with GD 47 in his Mohali studio. It was during those sessions that GD 47 first introduced Su Real to Kaater, and the three vibed out to a fresh sketch Dutty Deedz had sent over by email. That sketch eventually evolved into “Roku Na”.
