“Oonche” is a song about ambitions; about always aiming high; about lifting yourself up to achieve those dreams that once seemed out-of-reach... and then aiming even higher still!
The melodic rap vocals and mischievous lyrics are provided by Nasty Ninja, one of the pioneers of Mumbai’s currently bubbling hip hop scene. Although he first stepped onto the scene as a breakdancer, today he’s a fixture on the mic, having collaborated with MC Altaf, Loka, Meme Machine, Shaikhspeare, among others. Nasty is known for his smooth flow coupled with punchy one-liners.
The music was produced by Su Real and Dutty Deedz, who produce hip hop beats together as Real Dutty Beats. When the trio met up at Euphony studio in Mumbai, after listening to some pre-selected beats, Nasty insisted on starting something from scratch. He wrote and recorded the entire song in under 2 hours on top of a rough beat that Su Real concocted on the spot. Later, they spent months tweaking and fine-tuning the song to get the vibe just right.
Abandoning the typical verse-chorus format, the song’s arrangement is constructed around Nasty’s “wavey” lyrical flow. Auto-tuned vocal effects soar over snow-capped mountain peaks until they tumble into valleys of reverberating breakdowns... only to rise back up again, as the song says “Oonche khwab, oonche soch” (the meaning of which translates to “big dreams, pure thoughts”, although “oonche” literally means “up high”).
About “Oonche”, the music video:
The aspirational theme of the song is explored by two dancers, a ballerina and a pole dancer, or “polerina”. Hurting from the rejection of a failed audition, the ballerina finds an unlikely source of inspiration in a polerina. The two forge an improbable friendship and spur each other on to work hard and achieve their dreams.
Sasha Shetty, the ballerina, trained in Russian Classical Ballet at the Russian Embassy in New Delhi and the Joffrey Ballet School in New York, U.S.A. She has toured around the world from Mexico to Taiwan as a dancer, instructor and choreography. Most recently Sasha was also featured in a music video by Ritviz.
Aditi Singh, the polerina, is a Certified Advanced Stretching Technique Instructor and Certified Licensed Liquid Motion Instructor based in New Delhi. Trained internationally in a diverse range of dance styles like jazz, contemporary, belly dance and even ballet as well, Aditi has found her strength and calling with the modern urban dance form of pole dance.
The video was conceptualized and directed by Zorawar Shukla, a.k.a. General Zooz of Reggae Rajahs fame. A friend and frequent collaborator of Su Real’s, Zorawar also directed the music video for the duo’s recent single together “Indian Wine”, that also fused two dance forms together: Bharatnatyam and Dancehall.
Zorawar says, ... “The concept for this video was to juxtapose two very different dance styles - ballet and pole. Although there are apparent differences between the two styles and how they are perceived, Sasha and Aditi were able to create movements which flowed seamlessly into one another. It was magical to watch them create art, in what I believe is the first time these two dance styles have been showcased together like this. Sometimes, inspiration to achieve our dreams can come from the most unexpected of sources!”
