How To Grind

from The Grind by Su Real

/

about

In American street slang, “the grind” refers to the daily act of working to earn money for the necessities of life. “Grinding” also refers to a playfully erotic dance commonly performed in clubs around the world. The Grind is also the name of Su Real’s DJ collective that has been setting fire to dancefloors across India. These key elements form the thematic backbone of this E.P. which otherwise conducts broad explorations with a variety of dance music sub-genres using primarily sample-based production.

“Grinding” – The opening track finds Su Real in beat-science territory a la Flume or Cashmere Cat, cutting up vocals from “Falsetto” by The Dream along with sound effects of coins dropping and cash registers chiming… And don’t forget to ring the temple bells when you ask for blessings from the Goddess Laxmi.

“Shining” – An anthemic Trap-style remix of Crime Mob’s “Shine Cause I Grind”, with back-up vocals by a pitch-shifted Pretty Ricky (“Grind On Me”), “Shining” shifts through several movements with an orchestral accompaniment before a suitably block rockin’ climax.

“On The Grind” – Clipse’s classic vocals for “Grindin’” ground up and splattered over a Juke/Footwork inspired sprawler. The glitchy rhythm (cut up from Masta Ace’s “On Da Grind”) is balanced by strings and harps. Occasional bursts of heavily processed tabla’s emphasize the universality of the hip hop art form.

“How To Grind” – Perhaps the most straightforward track on the E.P., and practical too – a tutorial on how to do the dance called “The Grind”. If the Ghetto-Tech, Trap and Baltimore Club influences don’t get your booty vibrating, those smashing toms will!

“Bump N Grind” – How could an E.P. about grinding be complete without the quintessential classic, R.Kelly’s “Bump & Grind” – reworked here by Su Real into a glitched-up Soul-Trap sex romp.

“Grind A Ton” – Lady Saw’s classic dancehall vocal for “Ninja Bike” a.k.a. “No Long Time” chopped up over a Moombahton base with a percussive tribal melee of bongos, cowbells and whistles accompanying it. With a nod to his early psychedelic influences like Neu!, Sonic Youth and Sun Ra Su Real pilots this ship into space.

The E.P. was mastered by Sahil Dhingra at Soundspeaks, New Delhi. Special thanks to Yashita Tripathi, Chiraiyu Sood, Sahej Bakshi, Nikhil Kaul, Tej Brar.
